The Arts

Greenfields Theatre Company

Providing that their academic targets have been met, Senior School Students are invited to participate in the GTC, which puts on a full-scale theatrical production with several performances each July as part of the school's Gala Weekend, the end-of-school year celebration. Students handle the many facets that a full-scale theatre production involves: public relations or marketing, finance, stage management, lighting, sound, props and scenery, costume making, and of course, acting and dancing.

The students do it all under the supervision of the Drama Department, and the productions have become well-known for their quality and professionalism. GTC builds communication skills and leaves students with a tremendous sense of accomplishment and achievement.

Recent productions include:

2001: A Midsummer Night's Dream
2002: Animal Farm
2003: The Hobbit
2004: It's a Wonderful Life
2005: Pride and Prejudice
2006: Wuthering Heights
2007: Robin Hood

Art

We consider art to be an essential life skill attainable by all students and it is taught as such. A custom-built Art classroom with balcony with panoramic views and facilities provides a bright and airy atmosphere for artistic development. Local artists who are specialists in their fields are encouraged to give workshops.

Lower Seniors (Key Stage 3)

During these years a wide range of media and processes are introduced to the students to enhance their understanding of the basic visual elements of line, form, colour, tone, pattern and texture. Art history is also covered and various periods researched -this includes outings to galleries and local facilities.

Upper Seniors (Key Stage 4)

During the first year students are encouraged to express their own ideas visually and learn to motivate themselves, exploring ideas in many different media. This leads to a mock exam in the middle of the year, and at the end of the year GCSE coursework begins.

Due to the small class sizes at Greenfields, the choice of coursework project is much wider than that in larger schools where it is usually chosen by the teacher. This gives students added incentive and gives them the ability to research independently.

Greenfields has facilities for pottery to be developed as a subject choice within Art.

Music, Choir & Rock School

Any student with an aptitude in music is encouraged both in the class music lessons and with individual tuition. Also very popular with our students, and students from surrounding areas, is the Greenfields hosted Sussex Rock School where local professional musicians give individual tuition. Students often form up into bands or groups during the year. There are regular opportunities to perform locally at several events, and performers usually take part in the East Grinstead Music & Arts Festival and other activities.

Greenfields Dance Company

In the Infant and Junior schools all children may participate in dance lessons as part of their physical and aesthetic development. After that, extra-curricular dance lessons in Classical Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Tap are offered to Infant, Junior and Senior students.

Dancers study the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance syllabus and are entered for examinations if they wish. As well as performing in many school productions, students have the opportunity to dance in local theatrical productions and choreograph their own dances.
