Dastardly foreign agents stealing Ministry of Defence secrets and plotting war, opposed only by the innocent but dashing Lieutenant Richard Hannay, accused of murder and on the run from the police – this was the basic plot of this year’s Greenfields Theatre Company play, applauded by many as the most entertaining they had ever seen.
“The 39 Steps was the most fun GTC I have ever rehearsed,” commented director and Drama teacher Maria Bird. “I laughed all the way through. The students were fantastic and kept on coming up with bright ideas that we put in. It is a play full of scope for physical theatre and our actors are very able at that.”
More difficult technically to put on stage than anything previously attempted at the school, The 39 Steps took a lot of rehearsals, but the incredibly intelligent and able actors, prop designers, costume-makers and promotional people -all students- very soon got into the swing of it, performed it perfectly and played it to packed houses on each of the three nights.
“Furthermore, the West End cast of the play The 39 Steps currently performing there got in touch with the school via Twitter,” said Head Teacher Grant Hudson. “They gave us tips and wished us luck! It was great to have their input and gave the students a real boost!”
